Solvent-Based vs. Solventless Extraction Explained
Cannabis extracts can be sorted into two broad families based on how they're made: solvent-based and solventless. Understanding this distinction helps explain why extracts like RSO and FECO look, feel, and behave differently from products like rosin or bubble hash. This guide breaks down both approaches.
Solvent-Based Extraction
Solvent-based extraction uses a liquid solvent to pull cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds out of the plant material. The solvent is then removed — usually through evaporation or a purging process — leaving behind the concentrated extract.
Common solvents include:
- Ethanol (food-grade alcohol)
- Hydrocarbons, such as butane or propane
- CO2 (carbon dioxide, used under high pressure)
- Isopropyl alcohol
Extracts typically made this way: RSO, FECO, distillate, and various hydrocarbon-based concentrates like shatter or wax.

Solventless Extraction
Solventless extraction separates compounds from the plant using mechanical or thermal methods only — no chemical solvents involved at any stage.

- Ice-water extraction (bubble hash) — using ice, water, and agitation to separate trichomes from plant material, which are then dried
- Dry sifting — mechanically separating trichomes using fine screens
Key consideration: Because there's no solvent to remove, solventless products sidestep residual-solvent concerns entirely. However, they can be more labor- and material-intensive to produce, which often affects price and availability.
